Industrial Oils and Purification

Industrial oils are used as a lubricant reducing friction and wear of parts and components in various industrial machines.  The main functions of this type of oil is anti-corrosion protection, dissipation of heat from friction parts, removal of contaminants and reduction of foaming.

Industrial oils can also be used as the base for hydraulic fluid, as well as grease, that extends durability and service life of industrial equipment.

Despite the fact that practically all industrial oils are thoroughly tested in laboratories before dispatch to the user, the oils will become contaminated during use and operation.  Industrial oil, just as with any other oil, can become contaminated by atmospheric oxygen, water and particulate matter.  Interaction with aggressive media may accelerate oil oxidation that is accompanied by the accumulation of even more unwanted contaminants in the oil.

Saturation of oil by contaminants degrades the oil’s performance.  Due to aging and contamination,  industrial oils lose the ability to efficiently dissipate heat and protect equipment from corrosion.

It would seem that the aging process is natural and nothing can be done about it except replacing the used oil with new and disposing of the old oil.  A practical operator however, will be concerned by the additional costs of used oil disposal, as well as the frequent cost of oil changes.

Fortunately, aging of oil is not all that critical with the advent of modern additives and oil processing equipment.  The aging process therefore, can be significantly slowed and the service life of the lubricating oil can be significantly extended.

It is however, necessary to regularly take oil samples to know and understand the oil’s condition and to detect and identify the contaminants degrading the performance of the oil and to purify the oil in a timely manner.

The “Sukhovey” Model by GlobeCore

The “Sukhovey” Model by GlobeCore is used to protect the solid insulation of electric power transformers from moisture.  Complicated, but also simple by design, the model remains one of the best the high-tech systems for the integrated treatment of contaminated oils and fluids anywhere in the industrialized world.

Here at GlobeCore, we believe that it is more cost effective to perform timely “Preventive Maintenance” rather than “Corrective Maintenance.”  It is usually easier and cheaper to prevent serious damage to your equipment rather than spending time and money to repair and/or replace that equipment after a major failure or breakdown.  Investments in equipment and maintenance however, need to be be justified.  So, let’s consider the possibilities and benefits of the GlobeCore “Sukhovey” model.

Over the last decade, a large number of the diversified technologies for serving oil-filled machines and equipment were developed.  Depending on the types and characteristics, there are models for pre-filtering oils, vacuum cleaning and degassing, sampling, laboratory studies, complete regeneration, lightning of fuels and many others.

The GlobeCore “Sukhovey” is designed to protect the internal solid insulation of electric power equipment.  Its mission is to clean the air that is used to remove mechanical impurities from the insulating oil tanks.

The Air-Drying unit present on the “Suhovey” is filled with an adsorbent material known as zeolite.  The unit maintains clean air by supplying it under pressure to the power unit for prevention of moisture accumulation.  It is also capable of preventing vacuum, formed by draining the oil, from interacting with potentially contaminated “outside” air.

The “Sukhovey” is composed of two adsorption blocks that are each 1 meter (1m)  in height.  The entire structure is designed so that the units works independently of each other and act as temporary replacements for the period of time it takes the zeolite materials to recover in each saturated block.

Air is supplied via a pipe to the collector where it is distributed from one of the adsorption units that contains the heated zeolite.  The air then flows through the ports to the heaters and is “ejected” under pressure through the hole at the bottom of the unit.

The “Sukhovey” is equipped with temperature sensors at both the inlet and outlet ports.  This not only allows the “Sukhovey” to provide safe and efficient control of the machine, but also to control the regeneration step of adsorbents due to the temperature differences.  The device operates with special zeolite adsorbents that are designed to absorb moisture.

The “Sukhovey” can operate continuously for up to 100 hours.  This is the maximum time during which you can choose not to enter the cyclic regeneration while using the “restore adsorbents” function.  If the model operates beyond this time it will require additional service.

Application

Technical Description

GlobeCore CMM units are designed as multipurpose Transformer Oil Conditioning units for field or factory use.  The units incorporate high capacity multi-stage electric oil heaters,  large capacity Vacuum Pumps with external connections for Vacuum filling work, three (3) stage particulate filtration systems, and connections for a large variety of service applications.

The Unit’s measuring devices include vacuum, pressure, and temperature meters.  The equipment can also be optionally supplied with a “water-in-oil” measuring device.  Installation of a water-in-oil measuring device allows in-line monitoring of water content.

Flow rates are variable from 0 to >10,000 liters per hour (L/H) and heating from 24KW to 210 KW in four stages.  GlobeCore systems are designed for easy operation and maintenance.

The principal functions of transformer insulating oils are to serve as a dielectric medium and as a transformer coolant or heat transfer medium.  In order to perform these functions, transformer oil must have the necessary qualities at the time of initial impregnation and filling at the factory and later be able to maintain the same quality in normal operation.

Short Process Description

Hot Filtration Mode

A gear type pump draws in the oil for processing via a valve and a strainer.  Processed oil is then pumped through the cartridge filter, the three-way valve and is then discharged to the processed oil vessel via a connecting line.

The above mode is also used for transformer core drying.  Transformer oil is circulated through the oil purification equipment.  After filtering the oil to remove the particles, the oil is heated up to max. temperature of 800C/1472F.  All residual gases are removed and the moisture is evaporated in the vacuum degassing chamber.  Residual moisture content can be reduced down to less than 3 parts per million (ppm).  Oil purification is a necessary maintenance process for oil-filled transformers and can be employed for removal of moisture from the transformer’s core and solid insulation. Heating of the transformer oil moves the moisture from paper to the oil and allows for its removal from the transformer.  The most common mistake made by operators of transformer oil purification equipment is to stop the drying process after reaching oil moisture content of less than 5 ppm.  After some time, when normal transformer operation conditions exist, the moisture content of the oil increases. It is essential to dry the transformer oil continuously throughout a long period.

Transformer Evacuation

Another required process is the immediate evacuation of the transformer after pumping the insulating oil out of the transformer tank.  The “Vacuum Effect” on the insulation surfaces greatly improves moisture content removal.  The process must be repeated several times before the desired effects will be achieved.

Hot Filtration and Thermo-Vacuum Drying

A gear type pump draws the oil in for processing via a strainer and cartridge filter.  It then directs the oil to the heat exchanger where the oil is heated by the heat conductor.  The oil is then fed to the vacuum drier’s sprayer after being heated to 60C/140F.  The Vacuum Pump maintains vacuum in the vacuum chamber.  a Vacuum can be regulated by valve(s) and monitored on the vacuum meter.  Filtered hot air comes into the chamber and removes gases and vapor from the oil’s surface effectively drying the oil.  The air is then discharged into the atmosphere via an oil separator by the vacuum pump.  A gear type pump then directs the oil into the processed oil vessel.  A programmable thermal regulator switch monitors the plant’s function continuously and maintains the pre-set temperature.
